Last year (2024) Lloyds Bank released a study that included things like the fact that 16% of adults don’t meet the foundation level of essential digital skills. This includes things like: browsing the internet, opening and saving a word document, and using search engines to discover/learn new things.
Here at The Code Zone, we think that everyone should have at least a base level understanding of technology (especially as you’ll struggle to find a job nowadays that doesn’t have you answering at least one email!)
How we encourage members to build digital literacy skills
In our clubs, members will practice many skills to do with technology, even beyond coding. Knowing how to use your keyboard and mouse to navigate our website and search projects for the things we need are key things that are needed in this digital age no matter what you are doing!
One thing that is becoming increasingly common nowadays is the online form, be it for doctors appointments, job applications, or even signing up for new services! A base level of computer literacy is paramount to navigating these forms and getting the help that many might need.
This, alongside things like being able to connect to a new wifi network are things that fall into the banner of digital literacy, and are things that are super important to learn.
Digital literacy in the age of AI
A big thing nowadays is AI, a good digital literacy can help you understand how and why it works. This also allows you to think critically of these new technologies and form your own opinions on their use.
Our STEM certified mentors take pride in their digital literacy and are always more than happy to impart new information to our members to help them improve in their day to day life!

About The Code Zone
The Code Zone teaches children aged 6 to 16 to code by building their own games. Outside the UK that is the Game Dev Academy: self-paced, so a child works at whatever hour suits them in any time zone, with a background-checked, STEM-certified mentor answering by text and video message.
It started in Britain, where in 2026 it was the highest-placed coding club in Club Hub UK's Top 100 Children's Activity Providers, and in 2025 received the Autism Inclusion Award from the National Autistic Society, the UK's leading autism charity. More than a third of members are autistic or have ADHD, based on what parents tell us when they join.

The blog is in two halves. Guides are the evergreen explainers written by the mentors who teach the clubs, covering the questions parents actually ask: what comes after Scratch, how to support a coding-mad child when you cannot code yourself, and what works for autistic and ADHD children.
Club news is the other half, and it is where posts like this one live: game jams, Minecraft builds and weekly roundups, written up by whoever ran the session. Neither is marketing.
